Air travel is a time-consuming activity.

Stop-overs and increased journey time are generally things passengers would rather avoid.

But just how much value do travellers attach to saving journey time? How much are they willing to pay to save those precious hours?

Skyscanner's ingenious data tool, Travel Insight, is able to show exactly how much, by crunching the numbers and plotting the price passengers pay to reduce their journey time.

We've picked 10 popular long-haul routes around the world which currently have no direct connection and show just how much the value of an hour saved can vary per route.

Try out our dynamic Travel Insight dashboard below which reveals how much passengers are willing to pay to save an hour.

  • Each circle represents one month's worth of bookings made through Skyscanner for a flight on the route pairings shown
  • The price shows the average price paid and average journey duration during time period
  • Use the Origin and Destination drop-down to see data for different routes
  • The bigger the circle, the more bookings made on journeys during that month
  • Hover over the route to see the average value a passenger is willing to pay for different durations of journey
  • Routes with a sharper incline from a price on the vertical axis to hours on the horizontal axis mean passengers value a short journey duration heavily and are willing to pay higher ticket values to avoid longer duration
